| To determine the best short handed poker rooms, we look at a few things. First, ring games. They must have a lot of tables available, and lots of players. We also want a wide range of stakes, with good traffic in micro stakes as well as high stakes. We're also looking at sit and go tournaments, and multi-table tournaments. Again, we want a wide buy-in range, and lots of players. Pokerstars and Ultimate Bet are great rooms for short handed players. Absolute Poker almost specializes in short handed ring games, and Titan is good at everything they do. Although it's lower on the list for lack of cheap sit and go's and no short handed multi-table tournaments, our #1 intangibles room is BodogLife. That's a juicy room! |

Obviously, in short handed play there will be weaker hands winning pots than at full, 10 player tables. So, winning players at short handed tables will see more flops, and play more aggressively than they will at full tables. For players who are naturally impatient, short handed tables are the way to go. First, since there are fewer players at the table, action goes much faster. Second, because most of the players at short handed tables are more impatient, they tend to act faster. Play your position stronger than you would at a full table. With less players, there are fewer premium hands dealt per hand. This means that the blinds are less likely to hold big hands. If you've read Sklansky, he points out that when a hand is folded to the blinds, since all of the non-blind hands folded, they likely had bad cards. In theory, there should be more good cards left in the deck for the blinds to be holding. In a short handed game, while the above still holds true, it's to a much lower degree than at a full table. When it's folded to you, raise in late position more often. Pre-flop, open up the number of starting hands you're willing to play. If you wait for aces all night, you won't get any calls when you raise, so stay busy to get action when you do make a big hand. |
